RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 98 * /O/ authorizing the library’s Head of Technical Services
to attend the Integrated Online Library Systems Conference to be held in New York City,
May 13-14, 1998.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The Integrated Online Library Systems Conference will focus on how to implement
technologies in libraries. Programs include plenary sessions, technical presentations, and
workshops on technologies that the library will need to integrate into services planned for
the new Main Library. Specifically, the library will need to replace its now obsolete INLEX
automated circulation system, which was purchased in 1987, with a new system capable
not only of providing the basic services but also of providing Internet access to electronic
resources of all types.
This conference will offer workshops on topics that address issues relating to a range of
new technology services the library plans to provide to Carlsbad residents. Included among
these planned services are ways of interfacing the library catalog with the Internet and
providing remote access from home or office to library services. In addition, vendors of
library systems will be displaying their products in the exhibits, enabling our staff
representative to compare features. Knowledge acquired at the conference will be useful in
planning, evaluating, and implementing services at the new Main Library.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost to attend this conference will be approximately $1,800, including flights, lodging,
registration and meals. Funds are available in the library budget to cover all estimated
costs.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA
AUTHORIZING THE LIBRARY’S HEAD OF TECHNICAL
SERVICES TO TRAVEL TO NEW YORK CITY TO ATTEND
THE INTEGRATED ONLINE SYSTEMS CONFERENCE,
MAY 13-14. 1998
WHEREAS, the Integrated Library Systems Conference will be held in New
York City May 13-14, 1998; And
WHEREAS, the library believes it will be valuable for the Head of Technical
Services to attend this conference; and
WHEREAS, funds are available in the amount of $1,800 in the FY
1997-98 library budget;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Carlsbad, California that permission is granted to the library’s Head of Technical
Services to travel out of state to attend this conference.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City
Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, held on the 14 day of
