CLK APPOINTMENTS RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. 9 8 - /&a 7 and 98*1&g , appointing two members to the Historic Preservation Commission. ITEM EXPLANATION: The Carlsbad Municipal Code, Chapter 2.42, as amended in December, 1997, provides that the membership of the Historic Preservation Commission shall consist of the following: l Five regular members and one ex-officio representative of the Planning Commission. l All regular members must have knowledge of and a demonstrated interest in historic preservation and local history. l Three members will have a background or interest in architecture, archaeology, history, biology, engineering, geology or a related field. l Two members will have an interest in local history and will serve at large from the community. The Code also provides that all members of the commission must be Carlsbad residents and registered voters. The term of Don Christiansen expires in April, 1998. Mr. Christiansen was originally appointed to the Commission in October, 1997, to fill an unexpired term and has served six months. Mr. Christiansen has served in the category requiring “a background or an interest in architecture, archaeology, history, biology, engineering, geology or a related field”. One appointee, therefore, must meet the qualifications for this category. The term of Connie Trejo also expires in April, 1998. Ms. Trejo was also appointed in October, 1997, to fill an unexpired term and has served six months. Ms. Trejo has served in the category requiring “an interest in local history and service at large from the community”. One appointee, therefore, must meet the qualifications for this category. Community Activities Candidly, I’ve not sought membership in community activities in the traditional sense. I’m a strong believer in supporting small and local businesses and do so at every opportunity. In my opinion, the practice of good will and support in daily living is a meaningful way to be a part of a community. Most recently, I have added my name to the waiting list for the Community Garden. The Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Trail is one of my favorite spots in Carlsbad. Living in a city that devotes great thought and planning to it’s natural amenities can only instill civic pride. - Additional Information or Comments All my life, I have been enthralled with old things and places. As a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, I have expanded my education and formed viewpoints on many interesting subjects relating to community development and preservation. By seeking this appointment, I aim to become more directly involved in the planning and implementation of historical projects throughout the city. I look forward to speaking with you in person.
