ITEM EXPLANATION The Sister City Committee designates Student Ambassadors for educational exchanges with Carlsbad’s sister cities and requires these students to raise money equal to the cost of airfare to the host city. The Committee provides $100 in funds for additional expenses and health insurance coverage for Student Ambassadors during the period of travel. Carlsbad resident Susanna Samaniego was designated as a Student Ambassador to Karlovy Vary in February 1998 by unanimous approval of the Sister City Committee, based on her exemplary academic standing and community involvement. She successfully raised the full amount of funding required. Major donors were Mr. Greg Provenzano, owner of Insight Electronics, and Mr. and Mrs. John Quinn. Each donor contributed $500 and received acknowledgement and thanks from the Student Ambassador and from the Sister City Committee. Susanna Samaniego visited Karlovy Vary in July 1998 and was the guest of the Scherhauferova family for two weeks. Ms. Samaniego returned with Lucie Scherhauferova, who was Karlovy Vary’s Student Ambassador to Carlsbad and stayed here with the Samaniego and Zeller families for three weeks. The airfare was purchased in April of 1998 by Ms. Samaniego to receive the most economical ticket. The contributions accepted will reimburse Ms. Samaniego for this airfare. FISCAL IMPACT The donated amount of $1,500 will be placed in the Sister City donations account and is to be appropriated for the airfare reimbursement to Susanna Samaniego and other Student Ambassador Program expenses.
