RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 99- / _ accepting a donation of $100,000 from Benjamin
Schulman and approving the naming of the new library auditorium in memory of Ruby G.
Schulman, and directing an appropriate letter of thanks.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
At the groundbreaking for the new library on January 14, 1998, Mr. Benjamin Schulman
announced his pledge of a donation of $250,000 as an endowment to support programs in .
the auditorium of the new library. In recognition of his generous donation, the auditorium
will be named The Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium in memory of his late wife.
Mr. Schulman will be making his donation in two installments; the first in the amount of
$100,000 which the City Council is accepting today; the second, in the amount of $150,000
to be transmitted sixty (60) days before the new library is dedicated which will occur in the
summer of 1999.
FISCAL IMPACT: There will be no impact on the General Fund. The donation will be
deposited in a library auditorium endowment fund and all interest earned will be
appropriated to support programs in the new library auditorium.

RESOLUTION NO. 99-l
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA,
ACCEPTING A DONATION TO THE CARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY FROM
BENJAMIN SCHULMAN AND APPROVING NAMING OF THE NEW
LIBRARY AUDITORIUM IN MEMORY OF RUBY G. SCHULMAN.
WHEREAS, Mr. Benjamin Schulman wishes to donate $100,000 to suport
programs in the auditorium of the new library; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Benjamin Schulman wishes to have the auditorium of the
new library named in memory of his late wife, Ruby G. Schulman; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to accept this gift to the Carlsbad City
Library; and
WHEREAS, the City Council hereby wishes to designate the auditorium in
the new library as the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Carlsbad, California,
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council accepts the donation of $100,000 on behalf of all
citizens of the City of Carlsbad and hereby appropriates these funds to the
library’s auditorium endowment account.
3. That the City Council hereby authorizes the Finance Department to
appropriate all interest earned by the endowment to support programs in the new
library auditorium.
4. That the City Council designates the new library auditorium to be named
the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium.

5. That the City Council authorized and directs the Mayor to send an
appropriate letter of thanks.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City
Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, at a regular meeting held on the 5 th
day of January , 1999, by the following vote, to wit:

Dear Mr. Schulman:
This will acknowledge and confirm your response to my letter of November 25,1997 in which I
summarized our discussions regarding your wish to donate to the library $250,000 in memory
of your wife.
You wish to have your wife’s name placed on the exterior wall of the library auditorium as
shown in the architect’s rendering, and you wish her name to remain there in perpetuity. The
City interprets “in perpetuity” to mean during the useful life of the building as a library
auditorium.
A plaque also will be placed in a visible location in the auditorium memorializing your wife
and indicating that your donation will be used for activities and programs held in the
auditorium.
You have proposed to make your donation in two installments: $100,000 in December, 1998,
and $150,000 sixty days before the building dedication.
It is understood that your donation will be used as an endowment to support the activities and
programs that will be held in the auditorium. These activities and programs will include
lectures, concerts, play readings, forums, discussions, etc.
I sincerely appreciate your interest in the Carlsbad City Library and your generous donation to
help support the programs and services which it will provide. The benefit to our community
will be substantial as together we seek to develop the library’s value and cultural influence.
Please return this letter with original signature and retain the enclosed copy for your records.
