CITY PROPERTY
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
The City Council action would be to direct staff to dispose of the surplus computer
equipment as directed by the Council.
ITEM EXPLAbJATION:
The 1998-99 CIP Budget allocated funds for the on-going replacement of desktop
computers and printers. It is essential to continually upgrade our desktop computers
and printers to take advantage of emerging technologies, to enable staff to maintain
levels of efficiencies and to insure a reliable and effective computing environment.
Desktop computers (PC’s) have a useful life of three to five years and laser printers can
be expected to last four to six years. In addition to the thirty-six computers, there are
twenty printers and thirty-five CPU~S that have been deciared surplus. All the obsolete
equipment is from three to six years old.
The Council has several alternatives to consider for the disposal of the surplus
equipment. Some of the options are as follows:
1. Donate the surplus computer equipment to the Carlsbad Unified
School District.
2. Donate the surplus computer equipment to the public schools
within the City limits of Carlsbad.
3. Donate the surplus computers to the Carlsbad Education
Foundation and their “KIDS ARE WORTH A MILLION” project.
4. Dispose of the surplus computer equipment at the City-County
Auction.
Staff recommends that the Council direct the staff to dispose of the surplus computer
equipment under any of the above mentioned options. The Council also may want to
direct the staff to draft a resolution for Council to consider setting up an allocation
method for future donations of surplus computer equipment.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The PC’s with monitors and keyboards average $250.00, a Macintosh computer with
monitor and keyboard about $400.00. The printers are valued at $200.00 each and the
CPU’s range from $30.00~$300.00 each. The total estimated value of the surplus
computer equipment is $15,200.
