ITEM EXPLANATION Since 1996, the City Council has distributed surplus computer equipment to local non-profit organizations and to schools located within the city limits of Carlsbad. On April 6, 1999, the City Council directed the staff to distribute eight surplus computer equipment to the Senior Center, 75% of the remaining equipment distributed to the Carlsbad Education Foundation and their “Kids Are Worth A Million” Project, and the remaining 25% to be divided to the other public schools within the City limits based on their percentage of Carlsbad students. Staff was also directed to return with documents establishing an allocation method for future distribution of surplus computer equipment. In an effort to distribute the surplus computer equipment equitably on an on-going basis, it is recommended that surplus computer equipment be allocated to the public schools located in Carlsbad. The allocation of equipment to schools outside the Carlsbad Unified School District would be based on the number of Carlsbad residents attending these schools. At the present time, there are eleven schools in the Carlsbad Unified School District, one in San Marcos School District, three in Encinitas School District, and one in San Diegueto School District.
