My name is Laurie Page, and I am applying for the position of Library Board Trustee.
My husband worked for J.C. Penney Company for 35 years and during that time we moved
to many different areas of the country. Because reading and libraries are an important part
of our lives, each time we moved one of the first things we did was to locate the library and
obtain a library card. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren and we all love to
read. Sam and I also collect books written by our favorite authors and also have an
extensive collection of old children’s books, which our grandchildren love.
We found that each area’s library was different, and each one had some good features as
well as other services that did not measure up to the others we joined. We learned to enjoy
the good things and adjust to the others. Some libraries were excellent. We used them all
and were there several times each month.
In 1977, we moved to Carlsbad for the first time. Our children attended school here and we
developed lasting friendships. Our daughters were active in the Girls Club, high school band
and choirs. Unfortunately, we were transferred away in 1979. However, our friends
remained and we have visited here ever since that time at least once a year.
When we talked of retirement, our number one choice was always Carlsbad. Last year my
husband accepted an early retirement plan from his company and we moved back to
Carlsbad in September of last year, having lived in Hawaii, Orange County, Idaho, and
Oregon since we left here.
Now that we have the time and a permanent home, we have sought to become more active
in our community. We are members of the Friends of the Library and the Historical Society.
I am also a new member of the League of Women Voters.
This is an exciting time to be a part of the library and the City of Carlsbad and I would very
much like to be a part of it. I believe that my experience as a user of many libraries would
be of benefit to the Board. I met with Dr. Lang to introduce myself to him and to find out
more about our Library. After that meeting, I am even more enthusiastic about the Library
and the wonderful and exciting things that dedicated library personnel and volunteers are
doing in our community.
I look forward to hearing from you about my application
Sincerely,
L&ra L. (Laurie) Page
