CITY OF CARLSBAD -AGENDA BILL
TITLE: DEPTHD! r-R
AUTHORIZE PURCHASE OF REPLACEMENT ClTYATTY.&
DESKTOP COMPUTERS CITY MGR-
RECOMMEND ACTION:
Staff recommends Council adopt Resolution No. 99-487 , authorizing the purchase of
replacement desktop computer systems from Compaq Computer Corporation.
The desktop computers discussed here are for the City’s ongoing computer equipment
replacement and upgrade program. This program is necessary to maintain a reliable and efficient computing environment. Desktop computing equipment has a limited useful business life of three
to five years. After this time, computers become outdated to support newer software in an
effective manner. Every year through the CIP, the Information Systems Department budgets
appropriate funds to meet the computer replacement needs of that year.
This fiscal year 112 desktop computers are scheduled to be replaced. These computers will be acquired directly from Compaq Computer using a long available and often accessed contract
program available to state and local governments as well as schools and libraries.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds for the computer replacement program were approved and are available as part of the 1999-2000 fiscal year CIP in the amount of $223,000. Public Works will also contribute an
additional $3,700 of budgeted monies to purchase certain equipment with features beyond the
basic recommendation of the Information Systems Department. The dollar amount of the
purchase may change slightly due frequent model and price changes characteristic in the
computer equipment industry.
