CITY MGR Receive presentation from Shelly Grossman, a citizen of Carlsbad, on a proposed renaming of the Sculpture Park to Ledgerwood Park, in Honor of Mr. Charles Ledgerwood. ITEM EXPLANATION: The City Council provides an opportunity for citizens and organizations to have an item placed on a City Council Agenda by submitting a letter to the City Council/City Manager. Attached is a letter (Exhibit 1) from Shelly Grossman, a resident of Carlsbad, who is requesting that the City Council rename the Sculpture Park to Ledgerwood Park, in memory of Mr. Charles Ledgerwood, former Mayor of Carlsbad. I HEARTILY AGREE WITH HER THOUGHTS ABOUT OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY/TOWN. EVERY&HERE I LOOK IS A PHOTOGRAPH OR PAINTING COME TO LIFE THROUGH MY SENSES. AT TIMES, I FIND MYSELF OVERWHELMED WITH THE GOOD FORTUNE I HAVE IN LIVING IN THIS COME-TO-LIFE- NOT-SO-STILL-PORTRAIT OF OUR TOWN. I WAS MOVED BY MS. BRILL’S THOUGHTS OF DEDICATING THE PARR [WHERE THE BARS’ USED TO BE], TO MR. CHARLES LEDGERWOOD. THIS TRULY FINE PERSON HAS GI\‘EN US A LEGACY THAT SHOULD BE PROPAGATED IN A MANNER BENEFITING ALL OF CARLSBAD’S CITIZENS. HE GAVE OF HIMSELF TO THE PEOPLE AND THE CITY OF CARLSBAD FOR OVER 50 YEARS. HIS TIME AND TALENTS, WERE LEGION: 1. THE JOY OF GARDENING, TEACHING OUR CHILDREN PLANT CARE AND SCIENCE. 2. WRITING HIS HOW-TO’ GARDENING BOOKS, GIVING AWAY FREE INFORMATION TO ANYONE WHO HAD A MOMENT TO LISTEN. 3. INVOLVING HIMSELF WITH THE POLITICS OF OUR CITY IN BEING OUR MAYOR. 4. FILMlNG THREE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS EVENTS AND DEVELOPING THE FILMS FOR THEM HIMSELF, FOR THE COACHS AND TEAMS PRACTICE SESSIONS. - 2 ALL OF THESE ENDEAVORS ARE THE HALLMARK OF A PROFOUND HUMAN BENG AND HIS DEEP COMMITMENT TO HUMANITY AND THE EARTH. I WOULD HOPE YOU WOULD FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MOVE FORWARD THE DEDICATION AND/OR NAMING OF THIS PARK TO MR. LEDGERWOOD’S MEMORY. PERHAPS SOME OF THE 252 VARIETIES OF FLOWERS HE SOLD COULD BE PLANTED N THIS AREA AND A SMALL PLAQUE, N HIS HONOR BE lMOUNTED ON THE CEMENT WALL. IT WOULD BE A FITTING MEMORIAL. He indicated that he does not support the Arboretum Society’s proposal to build a 9’ statue. The original intent from Shelly Grossman was to simply put a plaque on a bench that is already at the location and plant some of Mr. Ledger-wood’s seeds.
