TO THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF CARLSBAD:
I READ BARBM BR&L’S NORTH COUNTY TIMES ARTICLE OF 4-23-00
WITH GREAT INTEREST CARLSBAD: A TOWN OF MANY PICTURES.
I HEARTILY AGREE WITH HER THOUGHTS ABOUT OUR BEAUTIFUL
CITY/TOWN. EVERY&HERE I LOOK IS A PHOTOGRAPH OR PAINTING COME TO
LIFE THROUGH MY SENSES. AT TIMES, I FIND MYSELF OVERWHELMED
WITH THE GOOD FORTUNE I HAVE IN LIVING IN THIS COME-TO-LIFE-
NOT-SO-STILL-PORTRAIT OF OUR TOWN.
I WAS MOVED BY MS. BRILL’S THOUGHTS OF DEDICATING THE PARR
[WHERE THE BARS’ USED TO BE], TO MR. CHARLES LEDGERWOOD. THIS TRULY
FINE PERSON HAS GI\‘EN US A LEGACY THAT SHOULD BE PROPAGATED IN A
MANNER BENEFITING ALL OF CARLSBAD’S CITIZENS. HE GAVE OF HIMSELF TO
THE PEOPLE AND THE CITY OF CARLSBAD FOR OVER 50 YEARS. HIS TIME AND
TALENTS, WERE LEGION:
1. THE JOY OF GARDENING, TEACHING OUR CHILDREN PLANT CARE AND
SCIENCE.
2. WRITING HIS HOW-TO’ GARDENING BOOKS, GIVING AWAY FREE INFORMATION
TO ANYONE WHO HAD A MOMENT TO LISTEN.
3. INVOLVING HIMSELF WITH THE POLITICS OF OUR CITY IN BEING OUR MAYOR.
4. FILMlNG THREE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS EVENTS AND DEVELOPING THE
FILMS FOR THEM HIMSELF, FOR THE COACHS AND TEAMS PRACTICE SESSIONS.

ALL OF THESE ENDEAVORS ARE THE HALLMARK OF A PROFOUND HUMAN
BENG AND HIS DEEP COMMITMENT TO HUMANITY AND THE EARTH.
I WOULD HOPE YOU WOULD FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF THERE IS
ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MOVE FORWARD THE DEDICATION AND/OR NAMING OF
THIS PARK TO MR. LEDGERWOOD’S MEMORY. PERHAPS SOME OF THE 252
VARIETIES OF FLOWERS HE SOLD COULD BE PLANTED N THIS AREA AND A
SMALL PLAQUE, N HIS HONOR BE lMOUNTED ON THE CEMENT WALL. IT WOULD
BE A FITTING MEMORIAL.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION. I LOOK FORWARD TO
HEARING FROM YOU

RE: CHARLES LEDGERWOOD MEMORIAL PROPOSAL
Mr. Mamaux called to express his opinion regarding the Charles Ledgervvood memorial
proposal. He indicated that he does not support the Arboretum Society’s proposal to
build a 9’ statue. The original intent from Shelly Grossman was to simply put a plaque
on a bench that is already at the location and plant some of Mr. Ledger-wood’s seeds.
He feels that this has totally gotten out of control and that the original plan would more
than suffice to recognize Mr. Ledgerwood’s contributions.
