ITEM EXPLANATION: The term of Susan Pynes expires in March, 2000. Ms. Pynes was originally appointed in July, 1994 to fill an unexpired term and has served six years. The term of Bill Lignante expires in March, 2000. Mr. Lignante was originally appointed in April, 1996 and has served four years. The term of Gene Char-tier also expires in March, 2000. Mr. Chartier was originally appointed in April, 1996 and has served 4 years. Mr. Char-tier has indicated that he does not wish to be reappointed after the expiration of his term. Other members of the Commission are: Jim O’Meara, Felicia Shaw, George Willis, and Arthur Wood. My present term will expire March 2000. I would like to serve for another term to continue the work that has begun in many areas, and specikally, in arts education. A strong part~&$ established by the Arts Oflice and the school districts in Carlsbad has led to the planning and executing of an arts education program. In &ct, as of the Fall 1999, CUSD has a half hour of weekly music education for all elementary school students. The next phase of our arts education program provides visual and theater arts instruction for all students. The Arts O&e and Enciuitas Uni6ed elementaries are in the planning stages of a similar program. You are probably aware of the f&t that several studies have shown that education in music, visual arts, dame and drama has improved student kaming, test scores, self- esteem, and verbal and creative skills. The “arts industry” provides more jobs in the United States than the building industry. The arts industry in California, in particular, is a large and important part of our economy, I applaud you fbr your continued support of the Arts OBice and of the Arts Commission. The Arts Office’s programs, such as Jazz in the Parks, Artists-in-Residence, arts education, and the Cannon Gallery contribute a great deal to making Carlsbad the wonderful city that it is.
