Receive presentation from Cal State San Marcos Social Behavioral Research Institute
(SBRI) on the results of the citywide public opinion survey.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
In the summer of 2000, the City contracted with the Cal State San Marcos SBRI to perform
the citywide public opinion survey. This survey was conducted in the fall of 2000, with the
draft results reported at the City Council goal workshop in February 2001. At that
workshop, staff requested to conduct a follow-up presentation to the Council at one of their
regularly scheduled meetings.
The survey interviewed over 1000 Carlsbad residents and the results are broken down by
quadrant as well as the city as a whole.
SBRI is currently in the process of conducting a follow-up survey to clarify questions that
were raised from the initial data. Staff will return with an additional presentation once this
new information is analyzed.

l Respondent ages ranged from 18 to 89 years old, with an average age of 50
l 70% of the respondents have total household
incomes over $50,000
l 7% of the respondents have total household
incomes below $25,000

l Respondents have lived in Carlsbad an average of
11 years
l 80% own their home; 20% of respondents are
renting
l There is an average of 2.6 people per household
l 33% of the respondents have children living in the household
Demographics by Region
l The respondents did not differ by region with respect to
gender or household structure
l Regions in the South had higher incomes than those in the
North
- A majority of respondents in the Southeast (56.4%) and
the Southwest (57.2%) had total household incomes of
$75,000 or more
- Nearly a quarter of respondents in the Southeast
(23.4%) and the Southwest (23;3%) had total household
incomes of $125,000 or greater
l Those in the Northern regions had lived in Carlsbad
considerably longer than residents in the Southern regions

Preference for Specific Recreational
Facilities
l Respondents were asked about their level of
interest in two specific types of recreational
facilities
l 67.8% of the respondents believe there is a need for another public pool
l 77.5% of the respondents would like the city to
consider a large multi-purpose recreation facility
to house a gymnasium, aquatic center, meeting rooms, etc.
City Development
l Survey respondents were read a list of different types of development
that is presently found and could be built in Carlsbad. For each of
the items read, they were asked whether they would like to see “More
of’ or “Fewer of’ each of those development types. Respondents
could also offer that they felt the current amount was appropriate.
l A Majority of respondents said that they would like to see More of
the following types of development: Entertainment Venues, Specialty
Grocery Stores, Upscale Fine Dining, and Family-Style Restaurants.
l A Majority of respondents said that they would like to see Fewer of
the following types of development: Big-Box Retail, Fast Food
Restaurants, Quick Stop Stores, Shopping Centers, Multi-Family
Housing, and Single Family Housing.
