A Tribute and Celebration
December 7,200l
City Council Members and Mayor
1200 Carlsbad Village Drive
Carlsbad, CA 92008
Re: Project Proposal, Historic Carlsbad Sign
City Council Members and Mayor,
Project: A sign in downtown Carlsbad (similar to Highway 101 Encinitas sign)
located on Carlsbad Boulevard in front of the Twin Inns, arching across
street approximately 25 feet from intersection. This project will
commemorate Carlsbad’s 50* Anniversary as a city.
Design: Green background, white lettering, with Carlsbad as the main banner and
‘By the Sea” below. (Please refer to attached exhibit.) Intend to have
consistent and consecutive Highway 101 signs in Oceanside, Leucadia,
Cardiff, Solana Beach, and De1 Mar.
cost: Actual sign
Connection of electricity to sign
(Plus cost of electricity per month)
$110,000.00
$20,000.00
The total expense of the project is negligible over 50 to 100 years at
approximately $lOO.OO-$200.00 per month.
Why?: Because we love Carlsbad, and it’s the best way to show-off our city
everyday and during world-class events such as the San Diego Marathon
and Carlsbad 5K. The design of the sign is consistent with the
architectural facade of the historic Twin Inns.
Suggestions: 1. Put on fast track for SO* Anniversary Celebration in 2002.
2. Store a time capsule in one of the columns enclosing mementos from
the past 50 years. At the lOOti Anniversary Celebration in 2052,
Carlsbad residents young and old can assemble to resurrect our
history.
3. Wrap the truss structure at specified times of the year to commemorate
events (Carlsbad 5K, San Diego Marathon) and perhaps, implement
silkscreen art contest with renderings that coincide with banners along
Carlsbad Boulevard.
4. Have an annual coastal cruise down historic Highway 101,
5. Sell t-shirts at fundraisers featuring a silkscreen of the Carlsbad sign
rendering.
Let’s do this now! Thank-you all for your time and continuous support.
Sincerely,
Carlton D. Lund
