A Selection Committee made up of Arts Office staff selected Southern California artist Sylvia Tidwell. Ms Tidwell has previously displayed work in the City’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery and was selected because of her history of using natural imagery and forms in her work. With a modest budget of $1 1,000, Ms. Tidwell was able to develop an entryway statement to the park which relates to the natural environment. The artwork consists of two brushed, stainless steel leaf-like forms, approximately 9 feet tall, placed on either side of the walkway as you enter the park from the Vancouver Street parking area. (See attached Exhibit 3) The artist worked closely with the City’s park planners in developing the concept and in suggesting related design patterns that might be integrated into other areas of the park. $50,000 $1,230,000 $ 60,000 An initial design proposal, produced by Ms. Tidwell, was approved by the Arts Commission and the work was subsequently put on display at both libraries for public comment. Results of the public comments were 66% favorable, 14% were negative, and 21% were not applicable. At the Arts Commission meeting held on March 20, 2003, The Arts Commission voted 6 - 0 to recommend to the City Council that the artwork be approved. The artwork was also presented as an information item at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on March 24, 2003 and received a positive response. $1,340,000 I I Total I EXHIBITS: 1.
