Adopt Resolution No. 2004-018 accepting a donation of $5,000.00 from San Diego
Foundations’ Dr. Seuss fund.
ITEM EXPLANATION :
Citystuff is a collaboration between Junior Achievement and the City of Carlsbad to introduce
third grade students to the city in which they live. Students learn about the role of government
and what types of businesses are located in a typical city. Students complete five Junior
Achievement “Our City” activities as well as two City of Carlsbad specific activities, which actively
engage students in learning and fun.
On October 28, 2003, Marilyn Campbell, CityStuff program coordinator, submitted a donation
application to San Diego Foundations’ Dr. Seuss fund. On approximately December 15, 2003,
the City was notified that the donation was approved for $5,000. This donation would be
appropriated for the Citystuff program to help offset the City’s portion of the costs that include
printing curriculum and instructor training.
The donation of $5,000.00 will help offset the cost to the City for the Citystuff program, which is
in congruence with Council’s goal of self-sufficiency.
The Communications Office recommends acceptance by the City Council. The donation will be
added to the Communication Office’s budget and appropriated for the Citystuff program. A letter
of appreciation will be sent on behalf of the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no Fiscal Impact to the General Fund.

Dear Mi-s. Geisel:
On behalf of the City Council, I thank you for recommending The Diego Foundation’s
Dr. Seuss Fund donation of $5,000 to the City of Carlsbad’s CityStuff curriculum.
The money will be used to print materials used by dedicated volunteer instructors who
enter third-grade Carlsbad classrooms one hour a week for seven weeks to teach students
about city government in a fun, memorable, hands-on way. Your organization’s
sponsorship will help introduce a new generation of citizens to the operation, programs
and services of our city while training them to become the informed, involved
participants in local government that Carlsbad will need in the future.
The next Citystuff session begins in Spring 2004 at many schools throughout Carlsbad,
reaching classrooms in Carlsbad Unified, Encinitas Union and San Marcos Unified
school districts. We greatly appreciate all sponsors and take pleasure in highlighting each
contributor on curriculum packets, in a wide array of program publicity and via City
Council recognition.
Thank you again for joining the CityStuff team. Together, we can fulfill the program’s
mission of “introducing students to their Carlsbad world.”
Yours truly,
Claude A. (“Bud”) Lewis
