LIB CITY OF CARLSBAD -AGENDA BILL TITLE: ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION OF $3,000 FROM CARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY IN SUPPORT OF THE CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER PROGRAM, AND APPROPRIATING DONATION TO THE LIBRARY’S FRIENDS DONATIONS FUND. CITY MGR Adopt Resolution No. 2004-257 accepting a donation of $3,000 from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library, in support of the CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER program, appropriating the funds to the Library’s Friends Donations Fund, and directing an appropriate letter of thanks. ITEM EXPLANATION: The Carlsbad City Library is sponsoring a community-wide reading program, CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER, featuring T. C. Boyle’s book, The tortilla curtain. The Friends of the Carlsbad Library have donated $3,000 to the Library to cover the costs related to the CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER program planned for September 2004. The estimated costs are as follows: Extra print copies (100) of the book Audio cassettes (5) Spanish language copies (3) Printing & Publicity materials, Resource Guide Honorariums for Speakers & Panelists Food for Author Program Total $ 1,400.00 450.00 50.00 500.00 400.00 $ 3,000.00 $ 200.00 The donation is to be appropriated to the Library’s Friends Donations Fund. FISCAL IMPACT: The Friends donation will allow the Library to provide this community- wide program with no impact on the General Fund. EXHIBITS: 1. BOYLE Boyle to Appear at Carlsbad Library on September 28 Carlsbad, CA ... “Carlsbad Reads Together” program with a full schedule of events and discussions centering on The Tortilla Curtain, a T.C. Boyle novel exploring the issues of immigration and urban sprawl in Southern California. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Carlsbad City Library. The City of Carlsbad Library is kicking off its exciting A highlight of the program will be Boyle’s appearance at 7pm on Tuesday, September 28 at the Ruby G. Shulman Auditorium in the Carlsbad City Library complex at 1775 Dove Lane. In addition to discussing his book, Boyle will be signing copies of The Tortilla Curtain and other books. The event is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. On September 30 at 7pm, the Library hosts a panel discussion at the Auditorium entitled “Carlsbad Looks Behind The Tortilla Curtain.” The panel will feature a cross-section of community members in what is sure to be a lively exploration of the book‘s issues as they relate on a local level. Panel members have not yet been selected. As with the prior event, this discussion is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. 2 According to Library Director Cliff Lange, the Library is ordering a sizable quantity of Boyle’s book. He reports, “We are holding 10 ‘book club’ style discussions, and are anticipating that many patrons will want to check out the book before attending.” A special resource guide will also be available at Library facilities and online at www.carlsbadlibrary.org.
