DEPT. POL
CITY OF CARLSBAD -AGENDA BILL
TITLE:
REQUEST FOR OUT-OF-STATE TRAVEL
TO ATTEND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
CLASS FOR POLICE DEPARTMENT COMPUTER
SERVER
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2004-353 approving an out-of-state travel request from the police
department for two police department information technology employees to attend training in
Colorado Springs, Colorado.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
As part of the ongoing Public Safety Technology Project, the police department must separate
all law enforcement network functions from the rest of the City network. As part of the
separation, the department must install and maintain equipment that will backup data on the
police computer servers. The police department purchased a STORServer system to provide
the ability to automatically back up all data on all police servers, necessary for both data
archiving and disaster recovery
The police department's Systems Analyst I and Ill must both attend training to learn to maintain
and service this the Storserver system. The cost of the training was included in the purchase
price of the Storserver system. This request is to cover costs of travel and lodging to the class
in Colorado Springs, Colorado. One police department employee will attend the training
November 16-1 8, 2004. The other police department employee will attend the training before
the end of this fiscal year. The vendor recommends that one employee be trained pre-
installation, and the second employee be trained six to eight months after installation.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost of the actual training class was included in the purchase of the Storserver system.
The cost for travel and lodging for each employee is approximately $950, for a total of $1900.
There are funds available in the police department budget to cover these expenses.
