RE: Arts Commission
Dear Mayor Lewis,
It has been four short years since I was appointed to the Arts Commission. The first year
I focused on becoming acquainted with the role of the Commission and its policies and
procedures. The second year I became more active and the last two I served as
Chairman.
Over that same period of time the Arts Commission struggled with its purpose and
direction within the community. Sometimes we had nothing on the agenda for our
meetings and members were disappointed at not having enough to do.
I am delighted to inform you that the Commission has evolved and now has purpose,
direction and plenty for our members to do. We have determined that in order to advise
City Council on arts-related issues we needed to educate ourselves about the arts within
our community. Now, each meeting has a presentation on the agenda about some aspect
of art that impacts the City, and each member is assigned to evaluate various arts
activities and report back to the Commission.
We feel that a well-informed Arts Commission will be a valuable asset to you and the
Council with regard to matters such as the Village redevelopment or the City Center
concept. It is with this in mind that I request that I be appointed to a second term on the
City of Carlsbad’s Arts Commission.
Sincerely,
Gary Hill
