CITY OF CARLSBAD -AGENDA BILL
TITLE: ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION OF A 2005
CARLSBAD GIRLS CLUB TO THE CARLSBAD CITY
LIBRARY ADULT LEARNING PROGRAM
DODGE SPRINTER IO-PASSENGER VAN FROM THE
CITY MGR+
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2005255 accepting a donation of a 2005
Dodge Sprinter IO-Passenger Van valued at $37,824.81 from the Board of Directors of the
Carlsbad Girls’ Club to the Carlsbad City Library Adult Learning Program and directing an
appropriate letter of thanks.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The Board of Directors of the Carlsbad Girls Club is completing the necessary steps to
dissolve the 501 (c)3 organization and has purchased the above vehicle with remaining
funds in the treasury. The vehicle was purchased for and donated to the Carlsbad City
Library’s Adult Learning Program primarily for the transportation of the special needs
students from the Carlsbad High School to the Adult Learning Program location.
The program directed at these special needs students was initially a pilot program
developed by Special Education Teacher Judy Gaitlan and Adult Learning Program
Coordinator Lynda Jones in September of 1998. The program has been highly successful
in spite of inadequate transportation. Ms. Gaitlan has been shuttling the students back and
forth in her private vehicle. The Adult Learning Program will be able to provide a more
viable method of transportation with the new van.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Public Works General Services Fleet Maintenance division has agreed to a direct
charge-back plan for fuel as well as labor & materials for all service to the vehicle. Under
this agreement, the van will not be added to the Fleet and replacement costs will not be
assessed. Fleet Maintenance has estimated an annual cost of less than $600 to operate
and maintain this vehicle based on an annual mileage of 1 ,I 00 miles. The vehicle comes
with a seven-year warranty and maintenance schedule requiring initial service at 10,000
miles. The Library has sufficient funds in the budget to cover these costs.
