RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2005304 acknowledging the memorandum dated July 26, 2005
from the Trustees of The Carlsbad Library Foundation and the request to name the lobby
area of the future Library Learning Center in honor of retired Library Director Cliff Lange.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The Carlsbad Library Learning Center was an idea and dream of retired Library Director
Lange for some time and will become a reality in 2007. The Carlsbad Library Foundation
has pledged to raise $1.5 million in support of the project and has asked Dr. Lange to serve
as an Honorary Chairman of that capital campaign.
The Carlsbad Library Foundation would like permission to honor Library Director Lange’s
achievements and service to the City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad City Library by naming
the lobby area of the new building the Cliff Lame Lobby. Plans for the lobby include a donor
wall for all capital contributors to the project and it seems the appropriate place to also
honor the retired director.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No increase in the cost of the project is anticipated to accomplish the naming of the lobby
and there should be no impact on the General Fund.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD,
CALIFORNIA, APPROVING THE NAMING OF THE LOBBY
AREA OF THE NEW LIBRARY LEARNING CENTER THE
‘CLIFF LANGE LOBBY”
WHEREAS, the development and construction of a Learning Center in Carlsbad
Mas a long time idea and dream of retired Library Director Cliff Lange; and
WHEREAS, The Carlsbad Library Foundation has pledged to raise $1.5 million
n support of the project; and
WHEREAS, The Carlsbad Library Foundation has requested approval from the
Xy Council to honor Dr. Lange by naming the lobby area of the Learning Center
3uilding the “Cliff Lange Lobby”;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Zarlsbad, California, as follows:
I. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council approves the naming of the lobby area in the new
,ibrary Learning Center the “Cliff Lange Lobby”.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council
If the City of Carlsbad, California, at a regular meeting held on the 11th day of
October , 2005, by the following vote, to wit:

Naming Opportunity for Cliff Lange in the Learning Center
Hi Ray,
On Thursday, July 28, the Foundation plans to ask Cliff Lange if he will agree to be one of the
Honorary Chairs for the Capital Campaign for the Learning Center. Lending his name will
certainly add credibility and should bring donors to the project because of his history with the
library. He also has a strong personal interest and we feel it will be a way for him to serve. IF he
agrees, we will make a Surprise announcement at the Dinner for him on the 14&.
Additionally the Foundation would like to have Cliffs name permanently attached to the
learning center. Just as we developed the naming opportunities within Dove of various rooms,
sections, etc. for capital donors at certain gifting levels, we wish to develop similar opportunities
within the learning center. Our thought is to name the lobby in his honor - the donor wall will
be in the lobby - there could be a nice picture of Cliff along with his accomplishments. The
lobby would lend itself well to be named in his honor, rather than naming one of the learning
centers within the facility, to the exclusion of others. The lobby is for all, basically. It would
also be a place where people could gather to meet, greet, etc. and the name would be used
frequently, for instance as in the Cliff Lange Lobby - similar to Schulman Auditorium.
If all this is agreeable, the Foundation would also like to make this SURPRISE announcement at
the dinner - I think he would be flabbergasted ---- and happy!
I know you will be out of town most of the time until the dinner. We would surely appreciate
your approval of naming just this section so we could move forward.
