Adopt Resolution No. 2006-057 authorizing the Carlsbad City Library to apply for a
grant from the California State Library for the 2006/2007 Public Library Staff Education
Program.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The grant was developed by a team of public library directors and staff in response to the
results of a survey conducted in 1998 and seeks to address the formal library education
needs of California public library staff seeking a Master's degree in library and information
science. Eligible applicant libraries must apply for the grant funds on behalf of their staff
that qualify for tuition reimbursement under this program.
Carlsbad City Library currently has two part time employees who received grant money the
last three years and several current part time employees who qualify to apply for the
assistance this year.
Carlsbad City Library is requesting approval to apply for the grant money at this time in
order to meet the deadline for applications in accordance with the Council calendar.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Awards will be made on a competitive basis and in amounts determined by actual tuition
fees for the academic year. If awarded the grant, the money will be sent to the City and the
Library Director will be responsible for administering the tuition reimbursement to the staff
member(s) designated in the award letter in accordance with the guidelines provided.

RE: 2006/2007 Public Library Staff Education Program
I am pleased to announce the 2006/2007 Public Library Staff Education Program. The
program, which was developed by a team of public library directors and staff, assists you
in your efforts to encourage existing staff members to pursue their MLIS degree. The
new program guidelines and application for this competitive tuition reimbursement grant
program follow this memo.
After reviewing the attached information, please distribute copies of this information to
interested staff. These application materials are also accessible on our website
(www.library.ca.gov/html/lsta_app_06_07.cfm) as a WORD document. Please be
advised that although we have not yet received federal Library Services and Technology
Act funds for 2006/2007 to support this program, the necessary efforts are underway.
Under separate cover we are also sending you copies of brochures on the program for
distribution to your staff that do not possess an MLIS degree. If you find you need
additional copies of the brochure, please email the number of additional copies needed to
Susan Walsh at swalsh@library.ca.gov, with the address of where the materials should be
sent.
Thank you for your continued assistance in helping us nurture a new generation of
librarians. If you are interested in serving as a Reviewer for the 2006/07 application
program, or if you have any questions regarding this program or these materials, please
contact Kathy Low by e-mail at klow@library.ca.gov or at (916) 653-6822.
