ITEM EXPLANATION:
The City Council provides an opportunity for citizens and organizations to have an item

letter from Joe Nunez, Team Manager, Carlsbad Softball Association (CSA), requesting
financial assistance to help support the Carlsbad Girls Softball Team in participating in the
ASA Western National Tournament, to be held in Me Allen Texas. The projected cost for
this trip is $17,200, of which CSA has raised $3500. CSA is requesting that the City Council
•^ consider and fund some portion of the remaining amount to reduce the financial hardship of
this event.
FISCAL IMPACT:
If approved, the fiscal impact would be the amount that City Council authorizes in
assistance. The funds would be appropriated from the City Council Contingency fund.

Dear Mr. Patchett:
It is with great pride and excitement that I am able to present this letter to the council members of the City of Carlsbad.
CSA (Carlsbad Softball Association) has the privilege of sending their 16U girls Softball team to represent the City of
Carlsbad in the ASA Western National Tournament. This tournament is being held in Me Allen, Texas, July 31 through
August 6,2006. The girls earned this honor just 2 weeks ago by placing second out of highly competitive field of 22 teams
in the Southern California ASA State Tournament. This makes Carlsbad one of two North San Diego County teams that
earned a spot to represent their city at a national level, Oceanside being the other.
Now that the excitement has settled down and we have been given the opportunity to forecast what it will cost for our
team to travel to Texas, we are realizing that our team is faced with financial challenges. With this said and realizing that
this is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of us, we are asking the council members for some assistance.
We would like you to consider making a monetary donation that will go exclusively towards the travel accommodations
for the players and coaches. We believe a donation made by you, in conjunction with the donation being made by CSA
and as well as our team fundraisers, it would make it possible for the entire team to participate in the tournament.
Our fundraising efforts so far has earned us $3,500.00, this was accomplished through hosting our own Softball
tournament, t-shirt sales and sponsorships. I have provided an estimated itemized list of costs for your review and
consideration.
