ITEM EXPLANATION: '
Carlsbad's CityStuff program is an outreach "program made up of employee and City volunteers. Each
spring, CityStuff volunteers are assigned to a classroom where they will introduce "their Carlsbad world".
This year there has been an unprecedented response of 15 schools who wish to welcome the program,
with a maximum of 68 classrooms will be participating. This six week long program educates students
about their local government and its processes and procedures. The curriculum is designed to
compliment state standards for third grade civic education. Donations are solicited to offset the City's
costs associated with printing classroom lessons. Staff is able to develop and advance this program by
generating teaching materials used by the volunteer instructors and other related materials.
The CityStuff program began in 2002 with the hopes of enriching the youth of Carlsbad. Waste
Management is a charter sponsor of this program, and has continuously made strides to improve the
effectiveness and success of CityStuff. The Gemological Institute of America is also a charter sponsor
of CityStuff. Because of their generosity, the City has provided 6,000 copies of the Fast Facts 101 book
to students over the years. Both donations made by Waste Management and the Gemological Institute
of America are to be appropriated to the CityStuff account.
FISCAL IMPACT: . '
Donations from Waste Management and Gemological Institute of America^ will allow the CityStuff's
innovative volunteer program to reach more schools and children than in previous years.
