DEPT. 18,873 1-23-07 LIB ACCEPT A DONATION FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY AND APPROPRIATE FUNDS DEPT. HEAD ^ CITY ATTY. <^ CITY MGR. ^^ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. 2007-014 accepting donations in the amount of $ 6,300.00 and acknowledging additional pledged support of $6,500.00 from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library and appropriating funds for expenditures within the current fiscal year. ITEM EXPLANATION: The Carlsbad City Library is once again sponsoring a community-wide reading program, CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER, featuring Elie Wiesel's book, Night. The Friends of the Carlsbad Library have donated funds in the amount of $3,300 to cover the estimated costs for books, films and various promotional materials in support of the CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER program for April 2007. The Friends have also donated $2,000 for the cost to re-order the Library's information magnets, and $1,000 in memory of Mary Melidio. The Friends have also pledged to cover the costs directly for up to $6,500.00 for speakers' honorariums, travel and meal expenses and the proposed teleconference with Mr. Wiesel, all parts of the CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER program. Currently there is an accumulated balance of $3,510.93 which represents a number of smaller donations from various sources received by the Library during this current fiscal year. Many of these donations are memorials requesting specific items to be purchased for the collection with appropriate "In memory of bookplates. This balance needs to be appropriated to the Library's 145 Special Revenue Fund budget in order for the Library to expend the funds. FISCAL IMPACT: The donation and pledged additional support from the Friends for costs related to the CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER program for 2007 will allow the Library to provide this community-wide program with little or no impact on the General Fund. The appropriation of the balance representing miscellaneous other gifts will allow the Library to fulfill its obligation to those donors who have expressed the purpose of the donation at the time it was made. WHEREAS, there remains an accumulation of similar donations to the Library of 15 lesser amounts which were received this fiscal year but have not been appropriated; 16 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of 17 Carlsbad, California, as follows: 1 O 1. That the above recitations are true and correct. 19 2. That the City Council accepts the donations from the Friends of the Library 20 and their pledge of direct support for the CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER 21 program. 23 3.
