DEPT. 19,004 05/15/07 CM Update on Citywide Emergency Preparedness and Response DEPT. HEAD l^- CITYATTY. ^ (^ CITY MGR. CS>^TIS.\ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive update on Citywide Emergency Preparedness and Response. ITEM EXPLANATION: The City of Carlsbad is a 42 square mile area which is home to more than 100,000 residents and a broad array of regional attractions and facilities, including an airport, power plant, waste water treatment plant, numerous shopping centers and a vibrant tourism sector. In order to maximize the health and safety of all those who live, work, and play within Carlsbad, the municipal operation functions on a 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year coverage cycle. As we have seen, our region is susceptible to a wide variety of natural and man-made disasters, from wildfires to sewer spills. This diversity requires that all City resources be emergency-oriented, prepared, and coordinated, as our first responders are just as likely to comprise staff from Public Works as they are the Police Department. As part of the City's ongoing effort to communicate and educate, staff will provide a presentation of its emergency preparedness and response efforts.
