RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2007-314 accepting a donation of $1,500 from the Friends
of the Carlsbad Library, acknowledging a pledge of an additional $40,000 of direct support,
directing an appropriate letter of thanks and authorizing the Finance Director to appropriate the
received funds to the Carlsbad City Library's budget.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The Friends of the Carlsbad Library have donated $1,000 to the Library for miscellaneous petty
cash expenditures for the Summer Reading Program for 2008. In addition to the donated funds,
the Friends have pledged $40,000 to be paid directly to vendors and performers for the 2008
Summer Reading Program.
Under a separate order of business at their last board meeting, the Friends of the Library
approved a donation of $500 for the purchase of materials for the collection in memory of
Evelyn Pullen Philip, long time member and Library supporter.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Donations from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library augment the budget for the Library and
allow for additional materials, services and programming for the community. In addition to on-
going support, the Friends of the Carlsbad Library often make donations as memorials and
items purchased with those donations contain bookplates acknowledging the donation and
purpose.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Accepting the donation does not qualify as a project under the California Environmental Quality
Act (CEQA Guidelines Section 15378) and no environmental review is required.

5 WHEREAS, the Friends of the Carlsbad Library have donated $1,000 to the
6 Carlsbad City Library for miscellaneous petty cash expenditures for the Summer
7 Reading Program for 2008; and
** WHEREAS, the Friends of the Carlsbad Library have pledged an additional

$40,000 of direct support for the 2008 Summer Reading Program; and

' NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
15 Carlsbad, California, as follows:
16 1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
17 2. That the City Council accepts the donation of $1,500 from the Friends of the
18 Carlsbad Library on behalf of all citizens of Carlsbad, and hereby authorizes
19 the Finance Director to appropriate the received funds to the Library budget.

3. That the City Council acknowledges with thanks the additional sum of
21
$40,000 pledged in direct support of the Summer Reading Program for 2008.
