(®* CITY MGR. ^/-^ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. 2008-017 receiving and directing the appropriation of individual donations of cash and in-lieu of cash, product donations that were sold at silent auction in support of the Recreation Department's Opportunity Grants program.. ITEM EXPLANATION: In support of the Opportunity Grants program, two events were held at The Crossings at Carlsbad. On July 27,2007, Dudek Engineering and Environmental organized a special "contractors only" golf tournament to celebrate the grand opening of the course. The project contractors and their consultants were asked to make a donation towards the overall cost of organizing and conducting the tournament so that it would be of no cost to all participants. Excess funds collected were generously donated to the City's Opportunity Grants program. On September 26,2007, the City of Carlsbad hosted a special Recognition Day in honor of the opening of The Crossings at Carlsbad. As part of the event, a silent auction was held to benefit, support, and raise awareness for the Recreation Department's Opportunity Grants program. On October 15,2007, the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended that the donations from the Silent Auction be accepted by the City Council, and on November 19, 2007, the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended that the Dudek Engineering and Environmental donations be accepted by the City Council. The many generous individuals and companies who contributed to the Opportunity Grants program will enable the Recreation Department to continue to contribute to the future growth, well being, and development of Carlsbad's youth (Exhibit 2). By awarding opportunity grants to deserving Carlsbad families, the Recreation Department encourages the development of positive self-esteem and social responsibility, decreases the occurrence of juvenile crimes and promotes overall physical fitness and health, thereby creating a strong and safe community.
