ITEM EXPLANATION: On July 7 and 8, 2007, the Carlsbad Recreation Department sponsored a Health and Wellness weekend that reached out to the community. The Health & Fitness Expo started on Saturday with seventy-two vendors providing information about their products and services. The Expo included demonstrations, seminars, and health screenings throughout the day. The weekend also kicked off a newly added element: a 3-on-3 street basketball tournament. Thirty-five teams from around the county gathered to compete in different age categories that ranged from 3rd graders up to 55 and older adults, for awards and prizes. There was an estimated attendance of 1,500 participants between the two events held at Pine Avenue Park. Everyone enjoyed participating in the activities and learning more about health and wellness. The weekend concluded on Sunday with the 26th annual Triathlon and over 1,000 entries in the race. Participants enjoyed the weather, unique trophies, and customer service that staff provided with the aid of over 230 volunteers. The City of Carlsbad wishes to acknowledge the generosity of various businesses in making this event a success. On August 20, 2007, the Park and Recreation Commission recommended that these donations totaling $9,928 be accepted by the City Council.
