RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2008-082 accepting cash donations from the sale of hand
made crafts that were sold at three craft sales in support of the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic
Park.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
This past holiday season, Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park hosted the fifth annual Holiday at the
Rancho, which has now become an annual tradition for many members of the local community.
The weather the night of the event was less than favorable, but the rain and cold air did not stop
approximately 1,000 people from attending the event. Highlights of this year's event included
an out door screening of The Polar Express, pictures with Santa Glaus and the return of Joan
Kindle's annual holiday craft sale which in and of itself has become an annual tradition in
Carlsbad.
Joan Kindle, Volunteer Curator for Leo Carrillo Ranch Park and long time park benefactor,
started working early last year to create an assortment of handmade crafts, jewelry and
keepsakes (Exhibit 2). The holiday crafts were very well received at the Holiday at the Rancho,
and attendees of all ages eagerly purchased Joan's creations at very affordable prices. Due to
weather the night of Holiday at the Rancho, two special sales were held the following weekend
to make the crafts available to those unable to attend the Holiday at the Rancho as originally
scheduled.
On February 4, 2008, the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended that the donations
from the sale of Joan Kindle's crafts be accepted by the City Council.
The City of Carlsbad Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge Joan Kindle's outstanding
dedication and devotion to Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, and the continued donation of her
time, talent and financial resources to support the park.
