I foolishly hoped my City Council might display the courage to ignore the vocal majority on this issue, and would refrain from the easy act of victimizing an unpopular minority Apparently it was too much to hope for. It is the ultimate in hypocrisy to claim this is done in the interest of safety or to prevent littering This is nothing more than catering to the vocal fascists among us Who will be next? " That brings me to the actual purpose of this letter. I can't, in good conscience, continue to serve the City under these circumstances, so this letter will serve as my resignation from the City of Carlsbad Traffic safety Commission. My resignation is effective as of the effective date of the new no smoking ordinance. Something which I am certain you have not considered is that now you are completely at the mercy of organized, vocal special interest groups, and I am certain you can expect any number of groups to emerge, demanding your obeisance to their particular interest. Good luck in the future; you are going to need it. Sincerely yours, Stephen C. Dorsey cc: Robert Johnson, City Engineer ll GORDON P. CRESS August 15, 2008 Hon. Claude A. "Bud" Lewis Mayor, City of Carlsbad 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA 92009 Subject: Re-appointment to the Carlsbad Traffic Safety Commission Dear Mayor Lewis, It has come to my attention that my present term on the Carlsbad Traffic Safety Commission is ending. I was appointed originally back in 2003 to finish out the term of a commissioner who resigned and then reappointed to my first full term in 2004. I have enjoyed my term on the commission, am presently chairing the commission, and would very much like to continue my service to the community as a Traffic Safety Commissioner. I therefore request that I be re-appointed to the Carlsbad Traffic Safety Commission. I look forward to your positive response to my request. Thanks for your consideration. I JOHN B.
