P & R ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION FOR OPPORTUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM DEPT. HEAD \ CITY ATTY. CITY MGR. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. 2009-281 , accepting a cash donation of seven hundred and fifty-one dollars ($751) in support of the Opportunity Grants Fund. ITEM EXPLANATION: On September 17, 2009, a check in the amount of $751 was received from La Costa Glen, as a donation for the Opportunity Grants program. The Opportunity Grants program was designed to contribute to the future growth, well being, and development of Carlsbad's youth through participation in Parks and Recreation Department programs. There are many benefits to both the individual and the community when the youth from deserving Carlsbad families are exposed to opportunities to develop positive self-esteem and social responsibility. These basic skills and activities help to decrease the occurrence of juvenile crimes and promote overall physical fitness and health. The Opportunity Grants program is one of many ways the Parks and Recreation Department creates a strong and safe sense of community. The generous donation from La Costa Glen will help us to continue this mission to provide financial assistance to children from low income families who could not otherwise afford to participate in recreation programming. On Monday, October 19, 2009, the Park and Recreation Commission recommended that this donation for $751 be accepted by the City Council. A letter of appreciation has been sent on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad to La Costa Glen. FISCAL IMPACT: Cash donation of $751 was deposited into the Opportunity Grants Special Contribution Special Revenue Fund to be used for purposes related to the development and enrichment of youth in Carlsbad.
