ITEM EXPLANATION: On Saturday, October 10th, the Recreation Department hosted the 2009 Pumpkin Plunge event at Monroe Street Pool from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. This year's Pumpkin Plunge was a huge success maxing out at the event capacity of 400 attendees. Children participated in pool games and had great fun participating in carnival games, arts, crafts, the Fun Zone and several pool activities. New this year was a Haunted House that took only those that dared to enter through rooms themed with pumpkins, spiders, cats, bats and rats, body parts and the House of Heads. Other activities included performances from the San Dieguito Synchro team, Dive San Diego and the Zombie Divers, face painting, a costume contest, trick-or-treating, and of course, the Floating Pumpkin Patch where every child left with their very own pumpkin thanks to the donation of over 300 pumpkins from Henry's Farmers Market. This event had the support of long time pool patron, Florence Ledesma who has been providing the trick-or-treating candy for the past several years. On November 16, 2009, the Park and Recreation Commission received the above donations and recommended acceptance by the City Council. Letters of appreciation have already been sent to these organizations on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad FISCAL IMPACT: Product/service donations totaling $1,911 assisted in offsetting the actual cost of providing this special event. A summary of the product/service donations is attached hereto as Exhibit 1. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 21065 and CEQA Guidelines, this action does not constitute a "Project" within the meaning of CEQA and therefore, does not require an environmental review. The total (personnel and M & 0) costs for the Pumpkin Plunge were $21,200. 400 people attended. I do want to clarify that the $21,200 is based on the Pyramid - so the numbers include all direct and indirect costs including planning, administration, facility, etc. Unfortunately we can't get you only the direct costs at this time. We have the actual costs for the supplies and outside services which is $3,400. However, what I have- the Pyramid Budget for the event - doesn't break down staff time as direct and indirect, it includes everything. I would need to speak with the staff that prepared the Pyramid Budget and unfortunately they are all on vacation for the holidays. Please let me know if I can clarify any further. Sue From: Lisa Hildabrand Sent: Monday, December 21, 2009 3:25 PM To: Sue Spickard Subject: pumpkin plunge Sue- Can you tell me what the cost of this event is? The AB mentions receiving about $1900 in donations for it but doesn't mention the overall cost. Thanks.
