UL/ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. 2010-053 approving the purchase, under the California Multiple Award Schedules (CMAS) contract, of replacement network switches for the Faraday data center from Nexus Integration Services with maintenance and support being provided by Cisco Systems, Inc. ITEM EXPLANATION: To connect various desktop computers together for common use, the Information Technology (IT) department uses Ethernet network technology. To enable electronic communication between all computers and printers on the City's Ethernet network, devices called switches are installed at all sites. In the late 1990's IT installed first generation switches throughout the City including the Faraday data center. These switches have served the City well over the years and through periods of rapid growth. They are now fully depreciated, beyond their useful end-of-life and no longer supported by the manufacturer. With the increased volume of network traffic, growing security concerns and the consolidation and standardization of network services, these devices must be replaced with new, more capable equipment. New switches will provide improved performance and reliability, as well as introduce new data communication capabilities, such as secure data transmission supporting credit card processing and business traffic prioritization. The planned replacement effort is part of ITs' strategic technology roadmap and will complete the migration from the end-of-life older technology to new, fully supported Cisco switches. The new equipment is consistent with the IT department's networking equipment standards. The recommended vendor, Nexus Integration Services (NexusIS), is an authorized reseller of Cisco equipment and maintenance and currently manages all Cisco maintenance contracts for the City. Additionally, Nexus Integration Services is a CMAS vendor and offers the City the lowest prices solicited. FISCAL IMPACT: The $247,995 for equipment and $29,800 for professional services for this project will be funded from the approved IT department capital equipment budget for fiscal year 2009-2010. The new equipment will be installed and configured by City IT staff with assistance from NexusIS via the current Agreement with NexusIS for Integration and Installation Services. Support and maintenance for the first year is included in the purchase.
