OF CASH AND IN-KIND DONATIONS TO
THE SPECIAL EVENT CONTRIBUTION
FUND IN SUPPORT OF THE 2010
PUMPKIN PLUNGE SPECIAL EVENT

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2011-001 , accepting individual cash donations in the amount of five
hundred dollars ($500) and in-kind donations of products and services with a fair market
value of one thousand five hundred eighty seven dollars ($1,587) in support of the Pumpkin
Plunge special event held on October 9, 2010, and recommend acceptance by the City
Council and directing the finance director to appropriate the received funds to the Parks &
Recreation Special Event Contribution Fund.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On Saturday, Oct. 9, the Parks & Recreation Department hosted the 2010 Pumpkin Plunge
event at Monroe Street Pool from 12 to 3 p.m. This year's Pumpkin Plunge was a huge
success with more than 500 attendees taking part in the fun.
This family-friendly event had children participating in pool games, carnival games, creating
Halloween themed crafts, and bouncing around the Fun Zone. The Haunted House took
those who dared enter through rooms themed with pumpkins, spiders, cats, bats and rats,
and into a creepy carnival and a House of Heads. A special show created for this event
included Zombie Divers as well as performances from the San Dieguito Synchro team and
Dive San Diego. Other activities included face painting, a costume contest, trick-or-treating,
and the featured activity, the Floating Pumpkin Patch, where every child left with their very
own pumpkin thanks to the donation of over 300 pumpkins from Henry's Farmers Market.
As part of the Park & Recreation Department's continuing effort to minimize General Fund
expenses, staff seeks support from various businesses. Many businesses sponsored the
event with both cash and in-kind donations for a total of $2,087.
On October 18, 2010, the Parks & Recreation Commission unanimously accepted the
donations and recommended acceptance by City Council.
The City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge the generosity
of all the sponsors involved. Letters of appreciation have been sent on behalf of the Park &
Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad.

FISCAL IMPACT:
Cash donations of $500 were deposited into the Parks & Recreation Special Event
Contribution Fund and will be appropriated for the purposes related to Park & Recreation
Department special events.
Product/service donations totaling $1,587 assisted in offsetting the actual cost to the general
fund. A summary of the cash and product/service donations is attached hereto as Exhibit 2.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 21065 and CEQA Guidelines, this action does
not constitute a "Project" within the meaning of CEQA and therefore, does not require an
environmental review.

6 WHEREAS, the Pumpkin Plunge special event was held on October 9, 2010
7 in Carlsbad; and

WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to accept the donations of cash, products
9
and in-kind service totaling $2,087 in support of the 2010 Pumpkin Plunge special
event; and
j2 WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to acknowledge the generosity and support
13 of community businesses that helped to support to this special event; and
14 WHEREAS, on October 18, 2010 the Parks & Recreation Commission received
15 cash, products and in-kind services totaling $2,087 and recommends acceptance by
16 the City Council.
17 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of

Carlsbad, California, the following:

1. That the above recitations are true and correct.

2. That the City Council does hereby accept $2,087 in cash and in-kind
22 donations as itemized in Exhibit 2.
23 3. That the City Council authorizes the finance director to appropriate $500
24 upon receipt to the Special Event Contribution Fund.
