RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2011-066 , accepting individual donations of product and in-kind
services totaling five thousand nine hundred seventy dollars ($5,970) in support of the
2011 Teen Scene special event.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On Saturday, January 29, 2011, the Parks & Recreation Department hosted the annual
Teen Scene special event at Calavera Hills Community Center from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00
p.m. More than 650 people attended this successful event. This year, eleven teen
bands competed in the popular Battle of the Bands competition. Additional activities
enjoyed by guests included a mobile video game truck with a variety of gaming units, a
film festival of 5 minute video shorts which were written, directed and filmed by teens,
and finally an interactive dance room and a teen art exhibit.
This event is the largest teen event that the city sponsors. It offers a safe environment
allowing parents to drop their teens off for a night of creative, fun and engaging activities
showcasing music, art, and technology. The main feature of the event, Battle of the
Bands, allows each band to showcase their skills during a 15 minute performance.
Performances are judged by professionals in the music industry on the band's stage
presence, crowd response, originality, vocal ability, and instrumental talent. The title of
"2011 Carlsbad Battle of the Band Champion" was awarded to a group of Carlsbad
musicians, Finding Autumn.
The Parks & Recreation Department solicited donations for the prize packs for our
Battle of the Bands Champion and other activities. Several businesses supported the
event with product and in-kind donations at a value totaling $5,970. Attached is a
detailed list of the businesses and their donations (Exhibit 2).
