RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No.2011-094 accepting a donation of four thousand, one hundred ninety
seven dollars ($4,197), from the California Coastal Rose Society for volunteer efforts and material
contributions at Magee Park during calendar year 2010.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
Staff would like to recognize the volunteer service and material contributions by the California Coastal
Rose Society at the Magee House during calendar year 2010. According to the Certification of
Volunteer Efforts submitted by the California Coastal Rose Society, the volunteers donated 270 hours
to help weed, feed, mulch, dead-head, prune and plant roses in the Magee Rose Garden. They
estimate their hourly rate at a minimum of $7, which equates to an in-kind donation of $1,890.
According to their certification, materials were also donated to help with the care of the roses. The
materials listed as being donated to the Magee House Rose Garden include: organic fertilizers (12
bags of Alfalfa meal, 8 bags of Sul-Po-Mag, 5 bags of Rose & Flower Food), 90 bags of mulch, and
10 new roses, and miscellaneous expenses. These items were either provided by the California
Coastal Rose Society, or affiliated vendors, in 2010, at their estimated value of at least $2,307.
The City of Carlsbad's Parks & Recreation Department is committed to building strong community
through service organizations and wishes to acknowledge and recognize the many talented
volunteers from the California Coastal Rose Society that made this continuing community service
possible.
On May 16, 2011, the Parks & Recreation Commission accepted the donation and recommends
acceptance by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The value of in-kind efforts and contributions on behalf of the California Coastal Rose Society for 2010
has been estimated at $4,197.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Accepting this donation does not qualify as a "project" under the California Environmental Quality Act
(CEQA) Guidelines Section 15378(b)(2) in that this donation does not result in a direct or reasonably
foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment and is for continuing maintenance activities
