ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION FOR
OPPORTUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM
AND APPROPRIATION OF FUNDS
DEPT. DIRECTOR
CITY ATTORNEY
CITY MANAGER
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2011-161 , accepting a cash donation of five thousand dollars ($5,000)
in support of the Opportunity Grants Special Contribution Revenue Fund, and direct the
finance director to appropriate the received funds.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On June 2, 201 1 , a check in the amount of $5,000 was received from The Leichtag Family
Foundation, as a donation for the Opportunity Grants program.
The Opportunity Grants program was designed to contribute to the future growth, well being,
and development of Carlsbad's youth through participation in Parks and Recreation
Department programs. There are many benefits to both the individual and the community
when the youth from deserving Carlsbad families are exposed to opportunities to develop
positive self-esteem and social responsibility. These basic skills and activities help to
decrease the occurrence of juvenile crimes and promote overall physical fitness and health.
The Opportunity Grants program is one of many ways the Parks and Recreation Department
creates a strong and safe sense of community.
The generous donation from The Leichtag Family Foundation will help us to continue this
mission to provide financial assistance to children from low income families who could not
otherwise afford to participate in recreation programming.
On Monday, June 20, 201 1 , the Park and Recreation Commission recommended that this
donation for $5,000 be accepted by the City Council, and direct the finance director to
appropriate the received funds.
A letter of appreciation has been sent on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department and
the City of Carlsbad to The Leichtag Family Foundation.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Cash donation of $5,000 was deposited into the Opportunity Grants Special Contribution
Revenue Fund to be used for purposes related to the development and enrichment of youth
in Carlsbad.

Dear Mr. Farley,
On behalf of the City of Carlsbad's Parks and Recreation Department and the youth of Carlsbad,
I would like to thank The Leichtag Family Foundation for their charitable donation to our
Opportunity Grants Scholarship Fund.
Your donation of $5,000 will contribute to the future growth, well being, and development of
Carlsbad youth, ages 17 years and younger, from low-income families. By awarding grants to
Carlsbad families, the Parks and Recreation Department aims to encourage the development of
positive self-esteem and social responsibility, decrease juvenile crimes, and promote physical
fitness and health, thus creating a safe community. Because of your generosity, we can continue
to "Create Community through People, Parks and Programs. "
Again, Thank You!
