RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2013-035 , accepting individual cash donations of six thousand
dollars ($6,000) and in-kind donations of products and services at a fair market value of nine
thousand five hundred dollars ($9,500) in support ofthe 2012 Carlsbad Triathlon & Wellness
Weekend held July 7 and 8, 2012 and recommend acceptance by the City Council.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
Saturday, July 7, 2012 kicked off the first of two large events that make up the Carlsbad
Triathlon & Wellness Weekend. The Carlsbad Community Wellness Expo, located at Westfield
Plaza Camino Real, was scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. With 70 participating vendors,
approximately 1,500 attendees participated throughout the day with activities and information
focusing on fitness, nutrition, and ideas for establishing healthier life habits. Children and adults
alike participated in demonstrations, wellness seminars, health screenings, and a fitness activity
circuit.
The weekend continued on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Tamarack State Beach from 8 a.m. to 12
p.m. with the 31^* annual Carlsbad Triathlon. One ofthe longest running triathlons in the
country, an estimated 3,000 spectators and participants came out to enjoy the event taking
place along the beautiful Carlsbad coast with the back drop ofthe Pacific Ocean, lagoons, and
scenic rolling hills. Over 200 volunteers assisted in providing safety and excellent customer
service during the weekend event.
As part of the Park & Recreation Department's continuing effort to engage the community, staff
seeks support from various businesses. Many businesses sponsored the event with both cash
and in-kind donations for a total of $15,500.
On September 17, 2012, the Parks & Recreation Commission unanimously accepted the
donations and recommended acceptance by City Council.
The City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge the generosity of
all the sponsors involved. Letters of appreciation have been sent on behalf of the Park &
Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad.

FISCAL IMPACT:
The donated products and in-kind services supplement the Parks & Recreation Department's
operating budget, enhance participant experience, and improve event offerings at no additional
expense to the General Fund.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 21065, this action does not constitute a "project"
within the meaning of CEQA in that it has no potential to cause either a direct physical change
in the environment, or a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment,
and therefore does not require environmental review.

3 CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING DONATIONS OF $6,000 IN
CASH AND $9,500 IN IN-KIND SERVICES IN SUPPORT OF THE
4 CARLSBAD TRIATHLON & WELLNESS WEEKEND.
^ WHEREAS, the 31®* Annual Carlsbad Triathlon & Wellness Expo special
events were held on July 7 and 8, 2012 in Carlsbad; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to accept the donations of cash and in-
kind products and services totaling $15,500 in support ofthe 31®* Annual Carlsbad
Triathlon & Wellness Weekend, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit 2 and

J J made a part hereof; and
12 WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to acknowledge the generosity and support
13 of community vendors and organizations that donated to this special event; and
14 WHEREAS, on September 17, 2012, the Parks & Recreation Commission
received the cash and in-kind services totaling $15,500 and recommends acceptance
by the Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Carlsbad, California, the following:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council does hereby accept $15,500 in cash and in-kind
