DIRECTOR CITY ATTY. CITY MGR. RECOI\/IMENDED ACTION: Adopt Resolution No. 2013-043 accepting an in-kind donation from NRG Energy. ITEM EXPLANATION: In 2002, the city collaborated with Junior Achievement to enrich the educational experience of the youth of Carlsbad. The result was the award-winning CityStuff program. Currently, each spring CityStuff volunteers are assigned to a classroom where they introduce the concepts of democracy and free enterprise to 62 third-grade classrooms in Carlsbad. Donations are solicited from private businesses to offset the city's costs associated with the classroom materials. This year NRG Energy generously offered to print and donate 8,500 copies of "When Carlsbad Became a City" booklets to the City of Carlsbad to be used by the students participating in the CityStuff program. The value ofthis donation is approximately $3,425. FISCAL IMPACT: Staff anticipates no fiscal impact as a result ofthis donafion. This donafion supports the efforts ofthe CityStuff program in the continuing educafion ofthe children of Carlsbad about democracy and their local government ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Pursuant to Public Resources Code secfion 21065, this acfion does not constitute a "project" within the meaning of CEQA in that it has no potenfial to cause either a direct physical change in the environment, or a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment, and therefore does not require environmental review. These booklets are an important part of the enrichment program and the students treasure having their own copies to take home. This donation will provide a copy of the booklet for each Carlsbad third grader for the next five years.
