ITEM EXPLANATION:
On Saturday, January 26, the Paries & Recreation Departnnent hosted the annual Teen Scene special
event at Calavera Hills Connmunity Center from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. There was an estimated attendance of
350 people. Ten teen bands competed in our Battle ofthe Bands competition. Attendees enjoyed a
variety of activities that included a mobile video game trucic with gaming units consisting of Wii, Xbox,
and PlayStation 3, a film festival of 5 minute video shorts written, directed and filmed by teens, as welt
as a dance room and a teen art exhibit.
This event is the largest teen event that the city sponsors. It offers a safe environment allowing parents
to drop their teens off for a night of fun and engaging activities. The main feature of the event. Battle of
the Bands, allows each band to show off their skills during a 15 minute set. Our three judges, all
professionals in the music industry, rate each band on stage presence, crowd response, originality, vocal
ability, and instrumental talent. A band from Carlsbad, Out to Sea, won the competition and took the
title of ''2013 Carlsbad Battle ofthe Bands Champion"
The Parks & Recreation Department sought out donations for the prize packs for our Battle of the Bands
Champion and other activities. Many businesses supported the event with in-kind donations at a value
totaling six thousand forty-four dollars ($6,044). Attached is a detailed list ofthe businesses and their
donations (Exhibit 2) as well as photos from the January 26 event (Exhibit 3).
FISCALIMPACT;
The cost associated with the donated products and in-kind sen/ices for prizes helped offset the actual

Letters of appreciation have already been sent on behalf of the Parks & Recreation Department and the
City of Carlsbad to these organizations.
