ITEM EXPLANATION:
The weekend of July 13 and 14 was filled with excitement as the Parks & Recreation Department hosted
nd
the 32"" An nual Carlsbad Triathlon and Wellness Weekend. The event was kicked off on Saturday,
July 13 with the Carlsbad Community Wellness Expo. Community businesses and vendors educated,
sampled, and demonstrated various products and services related to health and wellness. This year, the
youth sports division hosted a 3-on-3 youth boy's basketball tournament adjacent to the expo and
together we drew a crowd of approximately 2,000 people.
The weekend culminated on Sunday with the 32"^^ annual Carlsbad Triathlon. One ofthe longest running
triathlons in the country, 950 athletes participated in the IK ocean swim, 25K bike and 5K run along the
beautiful Carlsbad coast. The partnership with the Carlsbad Police Department and State of California
lifeguards ensured a safe race with a memorable experience for all ofthe athletes involved. Two
hundred (200) volunteers assisted with this large undertaking helping with preparation leading up to the
events, along with helping at the Wellness Expo and the Triathlon in various positions. This is the Parks &
Recreation's biggest special event and the staff comes together to ensure excellent quality and service for
an amazing experience.
As part ofthe Park & Recreation Department's continuing effort to minimize General Fund expenses,
staff seeks support from various businesses. Many businesses sponsored the event with both cash and
in-kind donations for a total of $14,050.
On July 15, 2013, the Parks & Recreation Commission unanimously accepted the donations and
recommended acceptance by City Council. The City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department wishes
to acknowledge the generosity of all the sponsors involved. Letters of appreciation have been sent on
behalf of the Park & Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad.
