RECOIVIMENDED ACTION:
Adopt Resolution Nos. 2014-043
Commission.
and 2014-044 appointing two members to the Arts
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The term of committee member Aaron Alter expires in IVIarch, 2014. IVIr. Alter was appointed in May, 2013
to fulfil the term of Pamela Friese. He is eligible for reappointment, and has expressed a desire to be
reappointed, to the Arts Commission.
The term of committee member Joann Johnson expires in March, 2014. Ms. Johnson was appointed in July
2011 to fulfil the term of Heath Fox. She is eligible for reappointment, and has expressed a desire to be
reappointed, to the Arts Commission.
Two appointments to the Arts Commission are therefore required.
Applications received for the Arts Commission are on file in the Office ofthe City Clerk.
NOTE: Members of the Arts Commission are subject to the provisions of the Political Reform Act, and
must file a Statement of Economic Interests.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Pursuant to Public Resources Code section 21065, this action does not constitute a "project" within the
meaning of CEQA in that it has no potential to cause either a direct physical change in the environment, or
a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment, and therefore does not require
environmental review.

Dear Mayor Hall:
Thank you for the appointment to tiie Arts Commission last year to finish the term of Pamela
Friese, who resigned last year. Please accept tiiis letter as my request to be reappointed in March
2014 when my current term is over.
As a musician and amateur art historian, I have been involved in the arts in various capacities for
my entbe life. In my short term as an Arts Commissioner, and in my roles on the Grant and Art
Gallery committees, I have served tiie City of Carlsbad with energy and dedication. It would be
an honor to continue on the Arts Commission for my first complete four year term and I ask for
your support in being reappointed.

Carlsbad Arts Commission. It has been an honor that I would love to continue; my unexpired term is
up this coming March 2014 and I would love to be considered for reappointanent to fulfill my first
full term as Commissioner. 1 have enjoyed serving our city and would love to have the privilege of
continuing to make a positive impact by supporting a culturally vibrant Carlsbad. Moreover, as
President of the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts, I am committed to supporting the work ofthe City and
the Cultural Arts Office - a position I truly value.
