Recommended Action
Approve a Resolution accepting a Fiscal Year 2016-17 cash donation of $10,460 from the
Friends of the Carlsbad Library.
Executive Summary
The Friends of the Carlsbad Library have donated $10,460 to the library for the purchase of
equipment and supplies for the creation of a new Mobile Maker Space.
Discussion
At the July 26, 2016 City Council meeting, council approved a resolution accepting a Fiscal Year
2016-17 cash donation of $71,000 and a pledge of $42,950 in additional support from the
Friends of the Carlsbad Library as its annual funding commitment. An additional donation of
$10,460 has been offered by the Friends to support a special project, funding a Mobile Maker
Space. The Mobile Maker Space will provide similar technology and creative learning-based
opportunities to the community which are planned for the new Dove Library Exploration HUB,
extending the lab experience into the community. It removes the static nature of a lab and
allows the components to be used in other library and city facilities, schools, and out in the
community.
The Mobile Maker Space will provide Chromebooks to teach topics such as coding, databases,
and software usage; a portable projector allowing classes to be taught outside the library;
sewing classes to enable teens and adults to learn the art of sewing; and 3-D printing
technology.
Fiscal Analysis
Donations from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library augment the operating budget for the
library allowing the purchase of materials and the continuation of programs for the community
that otherwise might not be possible.

Next Steps
Upon approval of the resolution, the administrative services director is authorized to
appropriate the received funds to the Library & Cultural Arts budget. The funds will be used to
purchase of equipment and supplies for the creation of a new Mobile Maker Space.
Environmental Evaluation (CEQA)
Pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 21065, this action does not constitute a "project"
within the meaning of CEQA in that it has no potential to cause either a direct physical change
in the environment, or a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment,
and therefore does not require environmental review.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARLSBAD,
CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING A FISCAL YEAR 2016-17 CASH DONATION OF
$10,460 FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE CARLSBAD LIBRARY
EXHIBIT 1
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California has determined that donations
from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library augment the operating budget for the Carlsbad City Library,
allowing the purchase of materials and the continuation of programs for the community that otherwise
might not be possible; and
WHEREAS, the Friends of the Carlsbad Library have donated $10,460 to the City of Carlsbad for
the Carlsbad City Library; and
WHEREAS, this donation will be used to purchase equipment and supplies for the creation of a
new Mobile Maker Space, including Chromebooks, sewing equipment and a mobile 3-D printer; and
WHEREAS, a Mobile Maker Space will expand the benefits ofthe new Dove Exploration HUB by
extending the lab experience into the community; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, as
follows:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council accepts the cash gift of $10,460 from the Friends of the Carlsbad
Library, in direct support of the library's programs, and hereby authorizes the
administrative services director to appropriate the received funds to the Library &
Cultural Arts Department operating budget to support the collection and programs.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a Regular Meeting of the City Council of the City of
Carlsbad on the 13th day of September, 2016, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Wood, Schumacher, Blackburn, Packard.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: Hall.
