Subject: Acceptance of a $79,415 cash donation and a pledge of $39,985 in
additional support from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library.
Recommended Action
Adopt a Resolution accepting a Fiscal Year 2018-19 cash donation of $79,415 and a pledge of
$39,985 in additional support from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library.
Executive Summary
The Friends of the Carlsbad Library have generously donated $79,415 to the library for the
purchase of library materials for the collection, and support of a wide range of programs for
adults and children. In addition to these funds, the Friends have pledged an additional $39,985
in direct support of library programs for the 2018-19 fiscal year. Per CMC 2.08.100 donations
over $5,000 must be approved by the City Council.
Discussion
The Friends of the Carlsbad Library is a non-profit, community-based organization, founded in
1957 with the mission to support Carlsbad City Library programs and activities. The Friends
raise funds through the sale of books at Friends book stores in both the Dove and Cole
Libraries, as well as on-line book sales. The donation will support Carlsbad Reads Together and
Summer Reading program materials, supplies for the Exploration HUB and library materials.
Additional pledged support will provide supplies for children, teens and technology
programming, reimbursement for performers, materials for the ongoing mindfulness series and
support of the Carlsbad Reads Together author talk. A letter of appreciation will be sent on
behalf of the City of Carlsbad and the Library & Cultural Arts Department to acknowledge the
ongoing support from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library in championing library programming.
The Library & Cultural Arts Department will send an appropriate letter ofthanks to the Friends
of the Carlsbad Library for their generous donation.
Fiscal Analysis
Donations from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library augment the operating budget for the
library allowing the purchase of materials and the continuation of programs for the community
that otherwise might be possible.
Next Steps
Per the adopted resolution, the City of Carlsbad Library & Cultural Arts Department will apply
these funds as stated above to support the identified programs and services.

within the meaning of CEQA in that it has no potential to cause either a direct physical change

CULTURAL ARTS DEPARTMENT
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California has determined that the Friends
of the Carlsbad Library have generously offered to donate $79,415 to the City of Carlsbad's Library &
Cultural Arts department; and
WHEREAS, the Friends of the Carlsbad Library have pledged an additional $39,985 in direct
support for library programs during the fiscal year; and
WHEREAS, the donation from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library augments the operating
budget for the Library allowing the purchase of materials and the continuation of programs for the
community that otherwise might not have been possible.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, as
follows:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council accepts with thanks the donation of $79,415 and an additional
pledge of $39,985 from the Friends of the Carlsbad Library.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a Regular Meeting of the City Council of the City of
