HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-04-18; Municipal Water District; 275; San Diego Water Purification Project UpdateSan Diego’s water repurification concept involves the additional treatment of approximately
20 million gallons per day of tertiary treated reclaimed water. The process uses state-of-the-
art technology to create a supply of water which is of equal or superior quality to untreated
imported water currently used as a source of supply to local reservoirs. The water
repurification plan being considered by the Authority and the City of San Diego would
involve discharging repurified water in a local reservoir, where it would be blended with local
runoff and imported supplies. This would add approximately 22,000 acre-feet to new local
water each year to San Diego’s supply. Beyond the reservoir, the City of San Diego water
system would continue to operate as it has historically, with reservoir water being withdrawn
on demand and undergoing filtration and disinfection treatment prior to delivery to City of
San Diego customers.

ITEM EXPLANATION:
Recognizing water’s importance to the region’s economic future, the San Diego County
Water Authority (Authority) has developed a comprehensive Water Resources Plan. The
plan focuses on fully developing cost-effective resources, improving the delivery system and
producing approximately 85,000 acrefeet of additional local water annually by 2010, more
than doubling the annual average local supply. In an effort to meet the goals of the plan,
the Authority and the City of San Diego are examining the use of purified reclaimed water,
or repurified water, to supplement the region’s potable water supply.
