CARLSBAD — A spiraling wall of a stone ma-
• sonry, built in unconnected segments, has been
recommended to serve both as public art and a
i play area at Stagecoach Park.! Designed by Los Angeles artist Lloyd Hamrol.
the broken spiral wall garnered the unanimous
< vote of the selection committee. Their recommen-
' dation will be presented to the city Arts Commis-
sion for approval, and then the City Council. Ac-
' cording to city arts manager Connie Beardsley,
; $75,000 has been budgeted to fund the sculpture,
s slated for completion by the end of this year.
• "I think it has nice, clean lines. It's pleasing to
the eye and it seems to conform to the shape of the
• terrain," said selection committee member Jim
Popovich, parks and recreation commissioner. "I
• can see adults sitting on it or walking around it.
The kids can play hide and seek on it."
• Hamrol's sculpture was selected over
? sculptures by Robert Feldman of Albany, and San
•"Diego resident .Jesus Dominguez. Feldman had; proposed a sculpture depicting larger-than-life
musicians playing instruments emitting steel
'. waves of music on which children could climb.
• Dominguez had proposed abstract stagecoach

The three sculpture designs had been chosen in
mid-April from 56 proposals submitted to the city
Arts Commission. The three artists were asked to
provide three-dimensional models of their
sculpture ideas. The models had been on display
first at the Carlsbad Library and then at the La
Costa Library, where members of the selection
committee met Friday to make their final deci-
sion.
Other selection committee members included
arts commissioner Dona Meilach Carlsbad artist
Nancy Robertson and city parks and recreation
employee Mark Steyaert.
A non-profit organization, the Arts Associates
incorporated last August and serves as an arm of
the city-appointed Cultural Arts Commission.
Arts Associates president Jackie Wrench said
members are planning tours to Costa Mesa to view
the sculpture gardens and performing arts center
there, and to Brea, to view the public art in that
city. The tours will likely be scheduled to coincide
with National Arts Week in November.
The Arts Associates are also planning to serve
as docents for the city-sponsored temporary out-
door sculpture display slated to take place in Oc-
tober. A similar show took place last year at
Holiday and Stagecoach parks; the site for this
year's display has not been selected, Wrench said.
This spiralling, broken wall is recommended 'or Stagecoach park.

Stagecoach Park
The Stagecoach Park selection
committee, with juror, Ron Onorato,
selected three finalists. They are
Jesus Dominguez, Robert Feldman
and Lloyd Hamrol. Each has submit-
ted a maquette, (3-dimensional
model) of their piece which is now on
display at the Carlsbad Libary. The
public is invited to stop by to see the
maquettes and to submit their com-
ments in the box provided. The ma-
quettes will stay at the library through
July 13, at which time they will be
moved to the La Costa Library for fur-
ther display. The Selection Commit-
tee will reconvene on July 22 to select
the piece for Stagecoach Park. The
City Council appropriated $75,000 for
this sculpture which will be com-

Discussion of all three maquettes, written proposals and budgets
were discussed.
Jesus Dominguez: The Committee liked the concept and the fact
that he tried to respond to the stagecoach. They felt it was
more static than the initial proposal and did not like it as
well.
Robert Feldman: The Committee liked the forms and shapes but did
not like the musician. Some members liked it better than others.
Lloyd Hamrol : The Committee felt it was most responsive to the
site and liked the rock and response to the stagecoach theme.
They thought it created imaginative spaces for children to play.
Comments from the Committee:
Robertson - "The sculpture feels like it freed the ruins".
Meilach - "I like the way the shapes flow with one another. It
can be used by adults and children".
Popovich - "Simple, pleasing to the eye - just like the looks".
Steyaert - "It's the most responsive to the site".
The Committee unanimously selected Lloyd Hamrol 's piece for
Stagecoach Park.
It was also noted that we had 466 responses from the public with
Lloyd Hamrol 's piece the favorite.
Hamrol - 199
Dominguez - 134
Feldman - 120
None - 13
The Committee suggested Hamrol consult the Parks and Recreation
Department regarding maintenance concerns. One member commented
that they preferred using a local source for rock if there is one
available.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
