November 16, 1988
TO: DAVID BRADSTREET, PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR
FROM: KEITH BEVERLY, MANAGEMENT ANALYST)^
MONTHLY REPORT FOR OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 1988
The 1988 Parks and Recreation Element was presented for public review to the
citizens in the southern section of Carlsbad during October at Stagecoach
Community Park. After considerable public review and comment, the Commission
unanimously endorsed the Element and forwarded the document for Planning
Commission and City Council adoption. It is anticipated the Element will be
presented shortly to the General Plan Review Committee.
City and County staff met recently to review a draft report for the feasibility
of a Golf Course on County property directly behind the Public Safety and Service
Center. A final report addressing additional staff concerns is due this week
and should be presented by January 1989, to the County Board of Supervisors and
the Carlsbad City Council for consideration.
Calavera Hills Community Park was vandalized during the early part of November,
the majority of damage was confined to the Community Center/Gymnasium. The
contractor estimates between $30,000 - $50,000 of damage occurred. Clean up
crews worked through the week to reduce the potential of further damage and
security guards have been hired by the contractor to eliminate additional
vandalism. This event is not anticipated to delay the opening date originally
scheduled for February.
Park Maintenance crews have assisted with the installation of art sculptures
located at Holiday and Stagecoach Park as well as City Hall and the Library.
The display of local artisan talent has been provided in cooperation with the
Cultural Arts Division.
Bids to resurface the Valley Jr. High School tennis courts have been received
and the rehabilitation project is expected to occurred during the Christmas
Holidays. Funding for this project has been made available by the 1986 Park Bond
Act.
The Carlsbad Community Swim Complex will be closed as of December 1st in order
to provide much needed repairs to the pool deck. The repairs should be completed
by February and Aquatic Recreation will resume to normal scheduling.
The Recreation Division will be sponsoring the 2nd Annual Kris Kringle Craft Fair
at Stagecoach Park on November 19th from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Enjoy browsing
through different booths featuring homemade crafts, you may find some very unique
gift items.
- HAVE A VERY SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING
