EXHIBIT; Director's Report - March - April, 1989. zo pu< zo \nto ou 11 "April 13, 1989 f, •> TO: DAVID BRADSTREET, PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR \_P VIA: KEITH BEVERLY, SENIOR MANAGEMENT ANALYST 14-FROM: DEBBIE THORNTON, INTERN (M MONTHLY REPORT FOR MARCH / APRIL 1989 Headlining special events this month is a free golf clinic, held for the youths of Carlsbad on Saturday, April 29. Local golf pros will teach kids how to play the game, with over 120 kids expected to participate. Two sessions will be held that day, 10:00 - 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. at Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course. Now that renovation is completed, activities are planned for spring at the Community Swim Complex. A Master's Swim Meet, co-sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, Aquatics Division, was held on April 2, 1989. More swim meets will take place throughout April, continuing into May with the Swim Complex hosting six Carlsbad High School swim meets. A First-Aid class was taught by Carl Pope to City employees on April 2. Water Safety Instructional Classes began April 10, and are being held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Lifeguard Training courses will begin April 22, and continue through May 21, 1989. Carl Pope was invited by the San Diego Chapter of American Red Cross to be one of four trainers teaching the new instructor material to all other instructors in the County. This is considered an honor and an obligation. Congratulations, Carl. Irrigation Installation at Buena Vista field is complete. Soil amendment and turf seeding operations are expected to commence shortly. In Sports this month, the track and field events are off and running. On April 1, over 100 youngsters participated in the South Carlsbad Meet co-sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and the La Costan. Perfect weather conditions and a great turnout contributed to the success of this fun event. The North Carlsbad Meet will take place on April 29, at Carlsbad High School. This event, co-sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and Capital Bank of Carlsbad has an expected attendance of 200 kids. Hopefully, similar weather conditions will prevail. At the April 11, 1989, City Council Meeting, the Council acted to uphold an ordinance previously introduced that entirely banned dogs from Carlsbad owned beaches year round. c: Ray Patchett, City Manager Frank Mannen, Assistant City Manager Department Heads 12
