MONTHLY REPORT FOR MARCH / APRIL 1989
Headlining special events this month is a free golf clinic, held
for the youths of Carlsbad on Saturday, April 29. Local golf pros
will teach kids how to play the game, with over 120 kids expected
to participate. Two sessions will be held that day, 10:00 - 12:30
p.m. and 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. at Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course.
Now that renovation is completed, activities are planned for spring
at the Community Swim Complex. A Master's Swim Meet, co-sponsored
by the Parks and Recreation Department, Aquatics Division, was held
on April 2, 1989. More swim meets will take place throughout
April, continuing into May with the Swim Complex hosting six
Carlsbad High School swim meets. A First-Aid class was taught by
Carl Pope to City employees on April 2. Water Safety Instructional
Classes began April 10, and are being held on Monday and Wednesday
evenings from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Lifeguard Training courses will
begin April 22, and continue through May 21, 1989.
Carl Pope was invited by the San Diego Chapter of American Red
Cross to be one of four trainers teaching the new instructor
material to all other instructors in the County. This is
considered an honor and an obligation. Congratulations, Carl.
Irrigation Installation at Buena Vista field is complete. Soil
amendment and turf seeding operations are expected to commence
shortly.
In Sports this month, the track and field events are off and
running. On April 1, over 100 youngsters participated in the South
Carlsbad Meet co-sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department
and the La Costan. Perfect weather conditions and a great turnout
contributed to the success of this fun event. The North Carlsbad
Meet will take place on April 29, at Carlsbad High School. This
event, co-sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and
Capital Bank of Carlsbad has an expected attendance of 200 kids.
Hopefully, similar weather conditions will prevail.
At the April 11, 1989, City Council Meeting, the Council acted to
uphold an ordinance previously introduced that entirely banned dogs
from Carlsbad owned beaches year round.
