MONTHLY REPORT MAY - JUNE 1989
Members of the Parks and Recreation Park Site and Facility Planning Subcommittee
have met with members of the Northwest Quadrant Citizens Group to address park
concerns. Subsequent meetings will be held on Thursday, June 15 & 22 at 7:00
p.m., June 29 & July 6, at 7:00 a.m. Meetings will be held at Heritage Hall to
discuss parks issues related to the Northwest Quadrant of Carlsbad for
recommendation to and consideration by the Parks and Recreation Commission, and
for the ultimate consideration by the City Council.
Staff has been investigating the possibility of establishing an access route
(pedestrian, bicycle) along the railroad right-of-way. A preliminary
presentation to department personnel has outlined suggested amenities and
alternative access points. Input from staff provided additional comments for
consideration and incorporation into a connective link between the City's three
lagoons. The study should be ready for presentation to the Commission in July.
The study is only preliminary at this time.
Chase field improvements have recently been completed and is currently under a
maintenance period. Buena Vista School field improvements have also been
completed by in house park maintenance personnel. The field should be ready to
accommodate soccer play within the next couple months.
The Carlsbad Triathlon is coming very soon with the date set for Sunday, July
9th. Please contact the Recreation Department if you can volunteer your time
to help with this special event, or perhaps you would want to participate as a
triathlete.
Use Agreements for the Community Swim Complex are currently being prepared by
staff for North Coast Masters and North Coast Aquatics. The Agreements will
reflect the new fees established by City Council during the fee revisions. The
very slight fee increase is reflective of the publics' comments, and the
Commissions' and Councils' support for the Community Swim programs.
Carlsbad voters recently approved an initiative that will allow the City Council
to spend General Fund monies for recreation amenities, i.e., Golf Course(s),
soccer fields, multi court tennis complex, and indoor soccer facility. Staff
has initiated the environmental review process for a golf course at the
LakeCalavera site. The services of a golf course consultant have been retained
to assist staff in determining the most beneficial alternative to pursue in terms
of a golf course development/maintenance/operation program. The recommended
alternative(s) will ultimately go before the City Council for final approval.
