TTO: DAVID BRADSTREET, PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR
FROM: KEITH BEVERLY, SENIOR MANAGEMENT ANALYST i
MONTHLY REPORT JUNE - JULY 1989
The Traffic Safety Commission approved the request to have 25 parking spaces
directly in front of the pool building designated as two hour parking during the
school year on weekdays, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Bob Johnson,
Traffic Engineer will now take the item to the City Council for approval. The
Department will work with the High School and the Police Department to "educate"
about the restricted parking next September. The goal is to provide easy parking
for pool patrons, not to give citations to the high school students using the
City's parking lot.
A preliminary report shows the Carlsbad Triathlon held on July 9th was another
huge success this year with lots of compliments received, no problems nor serious
accidents. The following facts are provided on the day after the big event:
Total Participants: 847 (versus 875 in 1988)
Number of Volunteers: 230
Donations - Monetary, from major sponsors $10,000
Product Donations (value), from major sponsors $48,550 +
The full report on the 1989 Triathlon will be ready in approximately two weeks.
The Harding Center office is undergoing minor renovations with additional
improvements to the building planned after the Seniors staff relocates to their
new headquarters The Reception Office area will be 3 1/2 feet larger and the
computer installed in what was a hallway. The Recreation Registration and
Facility Reservations system will be on line at this Center very soon. All
instructional classes at Harding Center have been set up and are ready for on-
line registration. Data on more than 1500 families is entered from previous
enrollment in classes and Daytrippers which makes it a "snap" to enroll in
additional classes or trips this Summer and Fall.
The railroad right-of-way/linear park study is approximately 50% completed. It
is anticipated the study will require an additional 60 days before completion
and presentation for public review.
Staff has been developing a time line/critical path for the development of the
municipal golf course. A preliminary report has been received from the Golf
Course Consultant and is currently under review by City Staff. The report
outlines the most beneficial and advantageous method to pursue for the overall
development/maintenance and operation program for this facility.
In cooperation with C.U.S.D. and the Carlsbad Soccer Association, staff has
developed a plan that will enhance the North Carlsbad Soccer program. Plans
included the renovation of Valley Jr. High School upper play field to provide
an improved soccer facility within the next two years, utilizing general fund
monies. Modified improvements will be made this year by City staff and major
renovations will be contracted for the following year. With the completion of
the Buena Vista play field and this years temporary rehabilitation of the upper
valley field, the soccer field shortage will be mitigated until other planned
park projects come on line.
