MONTHLY REPORT: JULY - AUGUST 1989
Staff addressed the City Council on August 15, 1989, regarding the progress of
the golf course development at the Lake Calavera site. Council directed staff
to prepare documents for the formation of a Golf Course Steering Committee and
a Technical Advisory Committee to aid in the development process. Direction was
also given in regards to determining alternative development options most
beneficial to the City of Carlsbad.
An update of the Recreational Facility Financing Subcommittee's recommendations
were also addressed. Staff has met with the North Carlsbad Soccer
representatives to discuss interim measures for soccer facility development.
The park maintenance division will perform minor restoration to the Upper Valley
Junior high school playing field this year, with a major renovation project to
take place next year. In addition, the Buena Vista school field is ready for
its first year of soccer play.
The tennis community has been informed of the relocation of tennis facilities
currently scheduled in the C.I.P. and funded by P.F.F., to be implemented in one
of the next park site to be developed. The top priority location of this multi-
court tennis facility (suitable for tournament play) is Alta Mira Park.
Two dedications at park facilities occurred this month, the flag pole dedication
at Holiday Park and the art sculpture dedication at Stagecoach Park. Both
ceremonies were well received.
Gerico's restaurant will host a benefit Golf Tournament September 16, 1989, at
Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course. A $30 entry fee will include a free buffet
afterwards and a chance at plenty of raffle prizes. On September 17, Gerico's
will host a bar-b-que beef dinner at the restaurant from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The
cost is $5 per person and 100% of the proceeds from both the golf tourney and
dinner will go to benefit the new Senior Center.
The grass is coming up at the site for the annual Summer Pops Concert to be
located off Faraday Road. The Parks Maintenance division has once again provided
a lush green rug for the symphony to be held Sunday, September 3rd.
One hundred participants and approximately 1,000 spectators enjoyed the recent
body surfing contest at Carlsbad state beach. The Recreation Department will
also, host a bodyboard contest September 9th - 10th. One hundred and fifty to
two hundred participants are expected to compete.
The gymnasium at Calavera Hills community park will be closed for floor
resurfacing from September 4th - 15th.
One hundred and eight adult Softball teams have signed up for the approaching
season. All slots have been completely booked with the exception of two co-ed
teams. Play begins next week.
